How to Get Organized During a Winter Storm & Help Others in the Process

Although removing piles of unwanted clothes, books, kitchenware, home decor and even furniture is often essential in reaching your organizing goals, this might not be the best time for you to take that on by yourself.

However, if your foyer, porch, garage or vehicle can’t be cluttered with donations right now but you have extra time at home (winter weather advisory, anyone?) you can still make progress with your organizing goals.

Although the larger, more voluminous items require more space and muscle (yay young team members and large vehicles!), the smaller items often take more time. Sure, you can organize your paperwork (which will feel GREAT at tax time!) but you could also sort through:

  • socks, gloves and mittens (which are dearly needed by houseless community members right now)

  • jewelry, scarves and belts (whether it’s fine jewelry, costume jewelry or both, your family will be grateful if you make decisions now about who gets what and what can be donated)

  • sewing and other act/craft supplies (if you don’t know a youth program that needs it, I am happy to help you find one!)

  • greeting cards (it’s a great time to send a few; who doesn’t need a distraction from pandemic-NTI-snowed in uncertainties?)

You could also digitally organize your photos, update your contact list, and tidy up your email inbox. And, though I often save boxes of photos, memorabilia, and more sentimental sorts for when, as Marie Kondo would say, your organizing muscle is built up, if you are inspired to get those treasures edited and organized right now, follow that instinct!

So, if you have a bit of cabin fever or you or family members want to help those in need, could use a distraction, or would enjoy walking down memory lane with you, find some tiny treasures to organize while you stay cozy at home.
