Finding Your Rocks: Organizing with Intention

Can you see the rocks behind me? The sun is so bright today, and I love it! I wanted to talk about rocks and why they hold a special place in my heart. There's a funny story from my family that perfectly illustrates this.

When I was very young, one of my sisters was really mean to me. In response, I told her, "I'm going to give you rocks for Christmas." She said, "Fine, I'll give you rocks for Christmas, too." When Christmas came around, I opened her gift, and it was books. I love books and always have, so I was delighted. But when she opened my gift, it was rocks. She was incredulous and said, "I cannot believe you gave me rocks." I replied, "Well, that's what I told you I was going to do."

Many years later, as adults, she recounted this story at a family gathering. She said, "You know, Pinky always does what she says she's going to do, even if it's rocks." It's a funny story, but it made me realize how much I genuinely like rocks.

I remember once when we were moving into a new house, I went to an interior designer at a paint store to pick out colors. Instead of bringing pillows or artwork like most people, I brought rocks - polished stones I loved. The designer was surprised, saying, "No one's ever done that." But those stones perfectly matched the colors we wanted for our new home. This past Mother's Day, I asked my husband for rocks for our front garden. I just really love rocks.

This got me thinking about the things our clients often struggle to let go of because they were gifts. It's important to let your family and friends know what your "rocks" are—the things you use, love, need, and have room for. This way, your home doesn't get cluttered with gifts that don't fit your life.

So, what are your rocks? What are the things that bring you joy and are essential in your life? Identifying these can help you maintain a clutter-free, organized space that truly reflects who you are. Let those who give you gifts know what your rocks are, and embrace the things that add value to your life.
