Hold on to That…For Now
Far be it from me, as a Decluttering Expert, to tell you to KEEP items you are ready to get rid of. But I do it often. With ONE category, in limited quantities, for a specific amount of time. You see, a VERY common cause of clutter for many people is too many organizing supplies. Many of us have tried to buy our way of out a cluttered home. We buy bins, baskets, over the door organizers, etc. as we try so hard to organize our homes. I feel so much love for my clients who are trying so hard to get organized and think they just need to buy the right supplies. YES, the right supplies are a VERY important part of creating a system that works for you and creates a beautiful space you WANT to keep organized. But there are many other steps that are needed. in order to create a sustainable system. Over-buying supplies may be distracting you from taking those steps.
So, pause with the purchasing and get strategic about what you really need. But, don’t get rid of those supplies yet. If you have space to store them, hold on to the ones that are in good shape. They can be very helpful DURING your organizing process. Even if you plan to get rid of all your old ones—the big ones, the purple ones, the wire ones, etc. — pause for a second. Before you let them go, consider keeping those that you have room for. Organize them into a specific space - your own personal shop. And shop THERE when you need to:
✔ Sort and need bins to categorize items
✔ Tidy and need bins to take items to the correct room
✔ Move and need sturdy bins to transport belongings
✔ Set aside donations and want to keep items contained
✔ Store seasonal items without relying on flimsy cardboard boxes
Then, when the bulk of your organizing is complete, donate those items that you never reached for or you no longer need. And absolutely donate the ones that you don'‘t have room for. Keep the ones that you found useful and can be part of your organizing maintenance. Having a manageable inventory of supplies on hand can make the process smoother and more efficient.
