A Simple System for returns… and Lattes!
Decluttering and organizing spaces is transformative, but sometimes the logistics of it all can feel overwhelming. One place many people get stuck is in the removal of items they have decided to let go of, including items that need to be returned. Most households could benefit from having a solid return system. Whether it’s returning an online purchase, something from a brick-and-mortar store, or even borrowed items like library books, having a plan in place makes a huge difference.
My go-to tip? Designate a specific spot in your home for returns—a bin, basket, or even a shopping tote—close to the door you usually leave from. Whether it’s your mudroom, foyer, or a convenient corner by the exit, label it “Returns.” That way, every time you’re heading out the door, you can quickly check it. If the bin is full or there’s something time-sensitive, take it with you and give yourself 24 hours to get it delivered.
If returns feel like a chore, here’s a little trick that works wonders for me: I turn it into a small reward day. When I schedule a “return run,” I treat myself to a matcha latte or something else that brings me joy. It turns a mundane task into a mini-celebration.
So, the next time you feel overwhelmed by all the things that need to go back to where they belong, remember—declutter, organize, and celebrate your progress. You deserve it!
