Venting to Make Room for Organizing
I've been thinking a lot about the emotional journey that comes with decluttering and organizing. It's not just about putting things in their places, it's also about navigating the feelings tied to those things. Many of my clients feel the need to vent when we first start working together or during their initial assessment. They have so much emotion wrapped up in their spaces that they just need to let it all out—and that's perfectly okay.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by your organizing goals or the clutter that's accumulated, it's important to find a trusted place to express those feelings. As a professional organizer, I take my clients' confidentiality very seriously. I'm here to listen without judgment and provide a safe space for you to share whatever's on your mind.
Recently, I worked with a client who spent quite a bit of time expressing her frustrations and anxieties. While she shared, I began organizing a section she had identified as a priority. I told her, "I'm still listening, and we're moving forward at the same time." She was worried about venting so much and said, "I don't want you to feel bad." I reassured her, saying, "Think of me as a vent—your feelings can pass through me without burden. I'm holding a sacred, constructive, joyful space for you."
After she got everything off her chest, something amazing happened. She started helping with the physical organizing, making decisions, and we accomplished so much together. She exclaimed, "I can't believe how productive I'm being! I think I could only do it because you let me express my feelings first and you still kept working."
This experience reminded me of how vital it is to address our emotions before diving into the task at hand. Venting helps soothe your feelings and clarifies your thinking, making the organizing process more effective and even enjoyable.
