I Shouldn’t Have to be Organizing the Same Things Every Day, Should I?

Part 3 in a series with Organizing Expert Pinky Jackson as featured on the podcast “Things I Need to Learn in Life I didn't Learn in School” with WAVE news anchor Dawne Gee

Dawne Gee: “I feel like every day I am working to organize my desk. And my work bag. And my kitchen. Every day. I must be doing something wrong because I shouldn't have to be organizing the exact same things every day.”

Pinky Jackson: Well, yes and no. Yes, if it's items you're actually using every day. Taking a few moments to put everything back in its place is needed in order to stay organized. And no, if you just have too much inventory and it is taking more than a few moments.

Ideally we can reorganize our purse and our desk really quickly at the beginning or ending of our day. But if we have 37 pens and we have notes written on note pads, Post-it notes, in journals & on scraps of paper, or if we have several cups on our desktop even though we only use our one favorite cup, then it will take longer to tidy up each day.

So it's about simplifying - reducing the inventory so we have fewer items to manage. And that's what I'm trying to get homeowners to think about, just like retailers think about volume of inventory - what is actually paying its rent in our home? What are we using? Once your purse, desktop and kitchen are decluttered, organized and if you need, labeled and contained, it will be much easier to maintain that in just a few minutes per day. If it's taking too long, it may mean you have too much on your counter, too much on your calendar or too much on your mind.
