Are There People that Enjoy Being Disorganized?

Part 2 in a series with Organizing Expert Pinky Jackson as featured on the podcast “Things I Need to Learn in Life I Didn't Learn in School” with WAVE news anchor Dawne Gee

If we are using the term “disorganized", we are probably not enjoying our space. It is either not functioning well for us or the aesthetic is not what we want. Or perhaps both. We can feel disorganized in all rooms we enter or just one or two. And what feels like disorganization can differ for each person in the family. We have different personalities, different lifestyles and different needs for how to manage all the items we own.

Those of us who are not bothered by what others call clutter are often visual learners. Visual people enjoy and often need to see items in order to find them. If they cannot see it they don't think they own it. They often feel happy when everything they've ever received as a gift is on display. But that volume is not usually conducive to their organizing goals, so we coach them through the editing process as we organize their home.

Those of us who are more hidden organizers need to have items out of sight. Having one greeting card or one piece of mail on the counter makes some people very unhappy. They feel better when all the flat surfaces are clear and there is more of a minimal aesthetic. Sometimes they easily let go of items and sometimes they simply hide them away. So the need there is similar - curate the collections, but then organize most of the inventory inside cabinets, drawers and closets.

So, we approach organizing in a way that each person can enjoy. Utilizing different tools and different resources we find out what it is that makes us happy in our home and work a system to achieve that.
