4 of My Favorite Items to Organize Dorms and other Small Spaces

Organizing small spaces like dorm rooms can be a challenge, but with the right tools, it becomes much more manageable. Here are four items that I believe can help organize almost every small space: command hooks, S-hooks, shoe organizers, and rolling carts.

Command Hooks

Command hooks are fantastic for organizing because they come in a variety of sizes and can hold different weights. Whether you need to hang a lightweight decoration or a heavier item, there's a command hook for the job. It's important to follow the instructions on how to properly put up the hooks to ensure they stay in place. Remind your college student, if they're the ones putting up the hooks, to check the weight limits—some hooks hold half a pound, while others can hold up to five pounds. Proper installation makes a big difference in how well they work and for how long.

S-Hooks

S-hooks are another versatile tool for small space organization. They can be used to hang items from bed frames, closet rods, towel bars and more. They're perfect for hanging backpacks, tote bags, hats, or even small baskets that store miscellaneous items. They are great on the shower rod for wet swimsuits, towels and hair bonnets. The beauty of S-hooks is their simplicity and flexibility—they can turn any rod into additional storage space instantly.

Shoe Organizers

Pocket type shoe organizers aren't just for shoes! These handy organizers can be hung over doors, over the end of a bunk bed or on walls (make sure to use the REALLY strong command hooks!). They can store “grab and go” items like sunscreen glasses and lip balm as well as small clothing such as gloves, scarves and camisoles. If you are going to place smaller items in them, the see-through types are best so you can see those ear pods! Use them for toiletries, snacks, school supplies, or any small items that need a designated spot. They help keep everything organized, visible and easily accessible, which is especially helpful in a small space.

Rolling Carts

Rolling carts are a game-changer for small spaces. They provide portable storage that can be easily moved around as needed. Use a rolling cart in a dorm room to store school supplies, toiletries, snacks, or even kitchen items. The mobility of a rolling cart means you can keep it out of the way when not in use and bring it out when you need access to your items.

By incorporating these four items—command hooks, S-hooks, shoe organizers, and rolling carts—you can maximize the efficiency of any small space. They provide flexible, accessible storage solutions that make staying organized much easier.
