The Joy of Personalized Organizing: When Clients Teach Us

I absolutely love the process of teaching my clients how to organize their homes, but what brings me even more joy is when my clients teach me how to organize their homes.

As professional organizers, we ask strategic questions to understand what our clients need so we can create an effective action plan. We then work to organize their spaces and follow up afterward to see if any adjustments need to be made. It's essential to know if anything that worked last year, last quarter, or last month isn’t working now so that we can tweak it as needed.

We recently worked with a client to organize her beautiful home, and one of the categories we created a zone for was her essential oils collection. We found the oils all over the house - on tables, nightstands, countertops, dressers, etc. We gathered them and gave them their own drawer in a great centralized location, organizing them carefully as we also organized the rest of the house. 

When she returned from vacation, she showed me two things. First, she had managed to maintain those beautiful spaces we had organized, and was so grateful for the new systems that worked for her family. The organization had stuck, which is always a wonderful outcome. But then she told me she had moved the essential oils back around the house. She explained that she loved having them in many different locations because she wanted her family and friends to be able to pick them up no matter where in the house they were and use them whenever they wanted. Each bottle was intentionally placed.

I loved this revelation because it highlighted her personal preference and style AND taught me the importance of USING my essential oils more often! Primarily, I loved it because it's a perfect reminder that organizing isn't about conforming to a single standard—it's about creating spaces that work for each person and their unique lifestyle. She deserves to be happy in her own space, and finding what works for her is what organizing is truly about.
