How to Turn Organizing Into a Fun Party (and Get Things Done!)

Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of organizing? If you've ever felt like your attention span isn't quite going to get you through a big organizing session, you're not alone. It can feel especially challenging if you struggle with focus or feel like you need more stimulation to stay engaged. But there's a fun, creative way to tackle this: plan your organizing session like you’re planning a party!

Step 1: Invite a Couple of Your Favorite People

Start by inviting one or two of your favorite people. It could be for your closet cleanout, sorting out your pantry, organizing your store room, or even dealing with that intimidating stack of paperwork on your desk. Ask them to hang out with you while you do it.

You’re not necessarily asking them to come and help (though that’s an option too); their presence alone will help keep you focused. It’s a concept called “body doubling”—just having someone there can be enough to keep you on track, and it feels less like a chore and more like a shared experience.

Your friends don’t even need to love organizing. They could just come along for fun, or maybe they have something they need to work on too. If so, ask them to bring something small—what I like to call a "shoebox" worth of stuff they need to process. That way, you’re both working on your own tasks but enjoying each other's company.

Step 2: Set the Scene—Make It Fun!

Now, what’s a party without some fun elements? Plan to have some snacks, drinks, and your favorite playlist ready. The key here is to transform the process into something enjoyable. The more fun it feels, the more likely you are to stick with it. Think of it as a decluttering party or an organizing bash!

Whether your friends are there to help or just keep you company, the shared energy and fun atmosphere can turn a task that might otherwise feel daunting into something you actually look forward to. This is a great way to channel those ADHD superpowers and stay focused while making progress.

So, the next time you're feeling unmotivated about getting organized, throw yourself a little organizing party, invite some friends, and turn it into a fun, productive experience. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish when you have a plan—and some good company!
