Systems Can Keep Your Life Organized and Stress-Free

As a professional organizer, I often get asked, "What exactly is a system when it comes to organizing?" In general, a system is the combination of resources, habits, and methods you use to achieve your goals. It's about creating routines that make your life smoother and more efficient. In organizing, systems can be put in place to streamline your calendar, your environment and your habits. Here’s an example of a system that keep my schedule organized. Instead of scheduling regular appointments (like haircuts) one at a time, I book them for the entire year. Every six weeks, like clockwork, I have a slot reserved with my wonderful hairstylist, Robin Leachman. I even make sure to include the following January, so there's never a gap in my schedule. My other calendar appointments can now be organized around these commitments, and I don’t run into problems because I need an appointment and either Robin or I don’t have time on our schedule.

The resources I use for this system are straightforward: Robin’s booking availability, my calendar, and automated appointment reminders. By taking the time to sit down once a year and schedule everything, I ensure that I have time set aside, Robin knows when to expect me, and I receive reminders without any extra effort. This habit keeps my calendar organized and takes the stress out of planning around holidays or other busy seasons.

Implementing simple systems like this can make a significant difference in your daily life. Whether it's scheduling appointments, managing household chores, or organizing your workspace, having a system in place helps you stay on top of things and frees up mental space for what truly matters.
