Organizing is Hard—But You Can Do Hard Things

I just wrapped up a session with one of my clients, and she said something that resonates with many clients: "This is really hard." Although she was very happy with how much we had accomplished, she was also coming to terms with just how challenging decluttering and organizing can be.

This woman is a powerhouse. She's a mother, she's fit, she has an amazing career—she can do hard things. But when you've never done a deep edit of your entire wardrobe, and you have casual, professional, and social outfits piling up, it's a lot. It's a lot of work, and it's a lot of decisions. So we did a lot of the work for her so she could make those decisions. We asked targeted questions to understand her current criteria for sizing, styling, comfort and access. We strategized the best use of her space, we categorized, placed, removed and styled. We got so much done, and she was thrilled. She said, "I can't believe how much we accomplished in such a short amount of time! But I don't want to work on it anymore; I'm exhausted!" That's why I love our three-hour orgqanizing sessions. Although we can easily do longer sessions, and are happy to carry the professional (including mental and physical) workload, clients who want to be involved in all the decisions carry the emotional workload. And that can be hard.

But she realized she can do hard things, and now she loves her closet. That's so important. If you're thinking about tackling a big project, get some help or pace yourself. Yes, it's hard, but as the amazing Brene Brown says, you can do hard things.
