spatial awareness for efficient, peaceful organizing
Spatial awareness is one of those skills that we, as professional organizers, either come by naturally or develop over time (or both!) It is essential, but sometimes taken for granted. I had a funny reminder of that recently, and it perfectly highlights how essential this awareness is when trying to create an organized, functional space in the midst of people and activity.
I was at the UPS store, dropping off returns for clients. Since it’s part of my regular route, I’ve gotten to know the staff pretty well. While I was handing over an item, I noticed the person perpendicular to me started backing up without looking. He was completely unaware of where he was going, and that I was being waited on at the next register. Without even thinking, I stepped out of his way, while still chatting with the clerk and getting the photo of my client’s return. The clerk started laughing, as the other customer didn’t even notice that I had danced around him in order to accomplish my task without disturbing him or getting run over.
And that’s when it hit me: this kind of spatial awareness is just second nature to me - we move around crowded and busy spaces all the time. As organizers, we’re constantly mindful of our surroundings. We move things carefully, making sure nothing gets damaged, and we navigate spaces in ways that make everything more efficient. Whether it’s a pantry, a bedroom, or an entire basement, we can see what others might not—how to maximize space, improve flow, and create systems that work for you. I am glad that tt was fun for the UPS clerk to watch, but they key is that my client’s project moved forward despite the obstacles. And no bystanders were hurt. LOL!
