When Gifts Become Clutter
What do you do when someone (including yourself) keeps bringing things into your life? Whether they’re (or you’re) ordering online, shopping, gift-giving, or offering you items they no longer want, it can feel overwhelming. This often happens to people who are in the middle of trying to get organized. It may be that we are just more aware of the incoming items and it may be that our resolve to declutter is being tested. But in any case, we need to set some boundaries.
How to do that isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It depends on what feels right for you and the relationship. If it’s someone you care about deeply, and you’ve already had that conversation — “We don’t need anything, we’re okay” — but they still can’t quite hear you, sometimes the easiest path is to say thank you, take the item graciously, and then drop it off at a donation center. Just because someone gives you something doesn’t mean you have to keep it.
If it’s someone new to sending you things, it’s a great opportunity to kindly but clearly let them know where you’re at in your organizing journey. You might say, “I really appreciate the thought, but we’re focusing on simplifying our lives right now. We’re trying to create more time for the things that matter to us — work, play, or just having a home that’s easier to clean.” Whatever feels true for you, communicate it. A simple “thanks, but no thanks” can do wonders.
The way you approach each person may differ. Some people will understand immediately, while others may not fully grasp your “no.” And that’s okay! If necessary, accept the item and rehome it ASAP. What’s important is knowing you have the right to enforce your own boundaries. You deserve to live in a space that reflects the lifestyle you want, where you feel peaceful and in control. You deserve an organized home that makes you happy and sometimes, protecting that space means saying no — even if you have to be the one to follow through on it.
