Stress-Free Entryways
When it comes to keeping your entryways—whether it's your foyer, mudroom, front door, or back door—organized and functional for the whole family, there are a couple of key concepts I want to revisit: access and ease. These two principles are essential for creating a space that really works for everyone in your household, and I'd like to dig a little deeper into what they mean and how you can use them to set up an organized, stress-free area.
Let’s start with access. Every family is unique—different ages, different heights, different ways of learning or processing things. So when you’re thinking about organizing your space, it’s important to take a customized approach. For example, where are your bins, baskets, or hooks placed? Can everyone reach their own things without asking for help every time? Think about how each member of your family moves through the space, what they can easily see and grab, and how they’re wired to understand organization. Whether someone is more visual, more hands-on, or needs a bit more guidance, the layout should reflect their needs and abilities.
Now, let’s talk about ease. I often tell clients that you need to make it easier to put things away than to leave them out. For some people, that might be as simple as having a clearly labeled container. Others may need hooks they can reach, bins they can toss a few pairs of shoes in, or separate dividers for each individual item.
Once the system is set, many people are good to go—no more mess, no more stress. There is a place for everything and they can put everything is in its place. But for others, it’s not that straightforward. Some family members may not naturally put things away, and they may need reminders until it becomes a consistent habit. Some may need to be motivated by the free time that comes once everything is tidy. And some may simply need fewer belongings so they have few items to organize.
Organizing your entryway isn't just about where you put your hooks or what type of bin you choose. It’s about understanding the unique needs of everyone in your home and creating systems that truly work for your family. With the right approach to access and ease, you can set everyone up for success and keep your entryways clear, functional, and stress-free.
